Our Proposal at the Big Mo Drive in Theatre | June 29, 2013 + Our Engagement Photos!

It’s National Proposal Day, so I thought it would be fun to share some photos from my own proposal and engagement session!

It’s been almost 5 years since we got engaged, which is so crazy to write. I feel like it was just yesterday that I was DYING to get engaged.

Tyler first asked me out at the end of our sophomore year in high school and we’ve been together ever since. We dated for 4 years before we got engaged, and I was just R E A D Y. Tyler would “fake” propose to me sometimes and it would drive me crazy. He proposed in June 2013, and I remember the May before that we went to the beach for our anniversary and I just KNEW he was going to propose that day. (I was hoping!) As we were walking off the beach to head to our car, he turned around, got on one knee, and then quickly pretended like he dropped something…It’s a good thing he’s cute. Ha!

But June finally came and I had NO idea a proposal was coming. (Although I should have—there were signs; I’m just so oblivious.) We went to our friend’s wedding that day, and afterward had a date planned for a move night at the drive-in theatre. It was a really busy summer for us, and we had barely had any time to see each other. This was one of our only nights we had together, so I was super excited to hang out with him.

We pulled up to the Big Mo and Tyler signaled to the guy taking the money that we were there. (I missed this.) We pulled into a spot that was saved just for us (I was oblivious), and then we got settled to watch the first movie. (At the Big Mo, there are always two movies with a brief intermission in between). I remember we watched Monsters University, but we were mostly excited about the second movie. (Although I can’t remember now what it was.) We had blankets and pillows laid out in the back of his truck, and when intermission came, Tyler started acting funny. He kept asking to hold my phone every time I wanted to use it (he was afraid someone would post something on Facebook about it before I knew—our families were in on the secret), he didn’t want me to lay down in the truck, and at some point he walked over to talk to the car parked in front of us. He said it was someone from his baseball team, and I didn’t think anything of it.

All of a sudden, I hear the song, “Marry Me” by Train playing and Tyler looks at me and grabs my hands. Then up on the big screen in huge letters I see, “Karly, Will You Marry Me?” I knew it was talking about ME because no one else spells their name like I do, and then all of a sudden Tyler pulled a ring out of his pocket and dropped to one knee.

I am the most awkward person ever, so I managed to squeak out a “yes,” but I was so shocked. I couldn’t believe it was really happening. During the whole thing, the music was playing, the people in front of us turned their lights on so we were in the spotlight, and everyone started honking their horns. (Like I said, I was in shock.)

We hugged, kissed, talked about a few things, and then decided we were way too excited to stay and watch the second movie. We left and then went to visit all of our family to share how everything went down.

It was the coolest thing ever. The best part was that Tyler actually had FILM made so that the big screen would have the question on it. The Big Mo uses digital technology now to show movies there, but back then they still used film. So Tyler had to find a company who could make film (for a price he could afford), and then he had to take it to the Big Mo beforehand so they could put it in the right spot to have it play during intermission. Isn’t that so cool?! And even though I can’t really do anything with it, they gave us the film back and I still have it!

It was one of the best days of my life. I felt like the happiest, luckiest girl in the world, and he still makes me feel like that today. Marrying him was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Enjoy our proposal photos and share your story with me in the comments below!

(P.S. The sweet car in the image at the top was not what we actually took to the drive-in. We went in his truck, but we borrowed a fun car for our engagement photos and went back to the Big Mo for the session! The pretty photos below were taken by Tzedibear Photography, and all the dark photos were from the night he proposed.)

Let’s start it off with a few photos from the wedding: [Insert brace face + our amazing friends!]

Here are the photos from the proposal: (Some of these were actually screenshots from a video that was taken while he proposed. The video didn’t turn out great, so I’ll spare you my awkward reaction!)

And now a couple of photos from our engagement session where we went back to the Big Mo! (We look like babies!)
