Hopefully you’ve been browsing around the site and you’ve learned a little about the experience of working with me, but I’m sure you have more questions. (There’s a lot to cover and only so much I can say in this limited space!)
Take a look at the frequently asked questions below, and definitely reach out if you have further questions or are ready to chat.
I talk all about film, shooting hybrid, and why I love it in this blog post.
I get into details and show image comparisons in this blog post.
Absolutely not! In fact, I tend to deliver more images than most photographers. I don't skimp on the amount of images, ever. You are in good hands, friend, and you can rest assured that I will never hold back any images from you! I have no maximums on the amount of images I provide you—so that means you get ALL the best images from your session or wedding!
There's always a possibility something could happen with the film images. Light leaks, under/overexposure, film getting lost in the mail...but I don't worry about these things! At every wedding, I bring a backup photographer (different from a second shooter) to shoot every image over my shoulder in digital that I shoot in film. This way, if something were to happen to the film, I have every image I took in a digital backed up copy!
See my process for photographing weddings in film here.
Film processing takes about 3 weeks. Packaging, mailing, receiving, developing, scanning—all of these things take a hands-on approach! This doesn't mean you'll have to wait EXTRA long to get your images though. My turn-around times are still faster than the average in the industry. (No waiting 8 weeks for your wedding photos!)
A "normal" sneak peek? Probably not. I prefer not to edit any digital images taken until the film images come in, and if I don't take any digital images, I won't have any for a sneak peek right after your session/wedding. BUT, you will get a different kind of sneak peek the day of your session/wedding (a cooler one, I think!), and you'll get an official social media one when your film images come in!
All digital images taken will be edited to match the look of film so you have a beautiful, cohesive gallery.
The delivery timeframe depends on the type of session and season. My goal turnaround time for each session is 3 weeks for portraits and 5 weeks for weddings.
Images from each session/wedding are delivered via an online gallery that is perfect for sharing & downloading.
Each session and wedding package comes with minor retouching—nervous pimples that pop up before the wedding day, minor clutter in the background, etc. Typically, I leave the wrinkles. I take a natural approach to photography and think that those beautiful wrinkles are part of what make you special. (: Where more extensive retouching is requested, there will be an additional fee.
Printing rights give the client (you) legal rights to print a photograph. Many photographers do not give printing rights, making it illegal to have prints made of any images taken during a session. (Note: Even if you are in the images, the copyright is still owned by the photographer.) I provide a print release with each package, because I want to encourage my clients to print their images and enjoy them outside of the digital space.
> Violate copyright laws, which include editing and cropping images (Instagram filters count as editing and are not permitted)
> Enter images into contests to win monetary or non-monetary prizes
> Sell the images for commercial use, or any other means of making money with the images
> Unlimited printing of your pictures (quantity & sizes)
> Posting of files on your social media (please credit me as the photographer when posting)
> May use digital files on your Christmas card
> Digital file to keep forever
Yes, you can purchase high-quality, archival prints, albums, and folios. Most prints and products can be purchased through your online gallery, and additional products can be purchased by emailing hello@karlyrichardson.com.
I try to be as involved as I’m allowed to be with the wedding planning process. I have attended many weddings and can give advice wherever it’s needed. I try to be most helpful when it comes to planning the day-of timeline. Beautiful pictures happen when there’s beautiful light, which means the perfect time of day or a great location for images. When I get to be involved in the planning, the images come out better and the day runs smoother. (Be on the lookout for a free downloadable timeline and planning guide coming soon!)
Yes. I make sure I’m well-equipped at each wedding with a backup camera, SD cards, batteries, etc.
I am available to travel within the U.S. for an additional fee, but do not currently book weddings internationally.
Wedding packages include a combination of day-of coverage, bridal and engagement sessions, and albums and a bridal portrait print. Most brides spend an average of $4,000 on their wedding photography experience with me.
Each wedding is so different, but a good rule of thumb is that you can expect 50 images per hour I’m shooting at your wedding.

Each portrait session comes with 50-100 images, depending on timeframe, location, couple/family, etc.
Gone are the days of white shirts and khakis for photo sessions. You’ll want to dress up for the session, more than you normally would, including hair and makeup. Coordinate colors with others in your shoot, but don’t match outfits exactly. The most important thing to remember is to dress comfortably. Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in or shorts that ride up too high. For inspiration and my favorite tips, check out my boards on Pinterest.
Absolutely! I love to travel to new places for sessions. Travel fees are applicable for sessions outside of the greater Columbia area.
Portrait session locations are decided by you! I can offer suggestions and tips for choosing a location. For example, indoor sessions should have ample natural light provided by big windows, and outdoor locations are best where the sun peeks in when it’s low.
